Happy New Year!
Welcome back students, families and community members to the 2014-15 school year at Dell Rapids Public Schools! We begin our calendar with a genuine excitement for the school year among new staff, veteran teachers and students looking forward to a challenging and successful experience.
Students have been welcomed by new staff members at Dell Rapids Elementary School, as wel as, a returning teacher with a new position. Phyllis Schaefer continues her journey in education as a new first grade teacher. Previously a kindergarten instructor, Mrs. Schaefer’s experience and passion for learning will make a nice addition to our first grade team.
We welcome our new staff members to our school and community: Tasha Davis – Grade 3, Jessica Hendrickson – Kindergarten, Mary Slunecka – EC SPED, Kelli De Waard – Speech, Sherry Jackson – Deaf Education, Jessica Scotter – General Education Associate,Mike McKee – Head Custodian and Paul Bunkers – Custodian.
Our school garden project has grown (literally) into a lush, green and bountiful experience for our staff and students. Staff, students and parents have taken care of the garden over the summer voluntarily and we are now experiencing the benefits of harvesting fresh vegetables. Students have already taken notice and are visiting the gardens to see the success of their efforts from planting last Spring. It was rewarding to hear students discuss the pride in their accomplishment. Values of hard work and determination are evident with many of our students while learning about the plant and benefits of gardening. We look forward to a Garden Induction Ceremony to be held Sept., 26 at 2 pm. You are welcome to join our time together to give our garden a name and thank all those involved with the project. Please call the elementary school if you plan to attend.
An exciting change is happening with our Music Department at the elementary school this fall. Thanks to “Box Tops in Education,” the district was able to purchase a classroom set of drums to be used in music classes for PK-4 students. The “World of Drumming” curriculum is being taught by Kim Gaul, music instructor, to our students this school year. There is a ton of excitement (and a lot of noise) coming from the music room as students learn skills of rhythm, beat and reading music. Studies have shown that learning to drum can enhance student’s physical strength and endurance, fine and gross motor skills, as well has hand eye coordination. We look forward to seeing the students develop these skills that also increase academic performance! Please keep sending “Box Tops” to school as we are able to use these funds to help all areas of our curriculum and building needs.
Our Open House on Aug. 26 was an overwhelming success. In all, we had four families that were not able to make it to school due to prior commitments. The success and support of this event is further proof of the commitment and care our community exudes for education. On behalf of the staff at DRES, we thank our community for your interest in our school and providing these opportunities for the youth of Dell Rapids.
