The defending Class A State Champion Dell Rapids golf team picked up right where it left off last year when four Quarriers placed in the top 10 and rolled to a tournament championship at the West Central Early Bird Invitational Monday, Aug. 18 in Hartford.
Dell Rapids senior Devon Weber shot a 73 to lead the field. His closest competitor, Vermillion’s Cooper Williams, shot a 77.
The Quarriers got a boost from junior Ty Hoglund. The junior’s 78 was good enough for third place.
Also medaling for Dell Rapids was Mason Schmidt. He carded an 81 for ninth place.
The Quarriers shot a team round of 311. Parkston’s 326 was second best.
Head golf coach Mick Hoglund said the opening tournament is a good barometer of how competitive the team will be during the season but means very little when it comes to winning another title.
“We‘re not talking about a state championship because there are five or six teams who could win,” he said. “We just want to keep getting better and see where we place at the end."
The state tournament is in Hot Springs.
In his 23rd year coaching golf for Dell Rapids, Hoglund said he’s been lucky to be able to coach good golfers and this year is no different.
The Quarriers return four of their top five golfers from last year, losing only Zach Schroeder.
