Dell Rapids School Districtís former elementary school building brought $270,000 when it was sold earlier this month to a Dell Rapids church.
The Dell Rapids School Board accepted the offer for the 47,492-square-foot building from River Community Church at a special meeting Friday, May 16.
The accepted offer is $125,000 less than what the district had the building and square-block lot listed for. Although school officials havenít made public the appraised value of the building, state law prohibits a government body from selling surplus property for less than 90 percent of its appraised value.
Replacing the roof and HVAC system on the building in 2009 and 2010 cost the district nearly $2 million. The district will make its final annual payment for the HVAC upgrades - yearly payments are about $200,000 - in June 2019.
River Community Church was established in Dell Rapids in 2006 and has held worship services at 406 east Fourth Street since 2007. Before moving to its Fourth Street location, the church worshiped in the former elementary building.
