T&C’s Other Place, Midway Corner and the newly opened Friendly’s in Baltic were among nine Minnehaha County businesses to fail an alcohol sting Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Other businesses failing Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Department’s county-wide compliance check were Palisades Oil in Garretson, Garretson Food Center, Heart T Stop in Hartford, Breck’s Bar and Grill, Pump House in Valley Springs and Blaine’s in Brandon.
The infraction is the first for Friendly’s, which opened in January. T&C’s Other Place and Midway Corner haven’t had any recent violations.
“It’s surprising that there were that many failed,” said Sgt. Jason Gearman. “I don’t know for sure if it was highest, but it’s one of the highest we’ve had.”
Though it can be intimidating for clerks to ask a customer to show identification, Gearman said, it’s their well-being at stake if an underage sale is made.
The Minnehaha County sheriff’s office conducted its annual check at 67 businesses. Clerks who sold to a minor were issued a citation with a mandatory court appearance required.
Furnishing alcohol to a minor is a class 2 misdemeanor punishable by 30 days in jail.
Businesses making sales to underage people may face fines, suspensions or loss of their liquor or malt license.
