The Quarriers picked up two more conference wins while dropping another last week.
The week got off to a rocky start for Dell Rapids when Canton topped the Quarriers 57-52 in Canton Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Playing flat early, Dell Rapids saw Canton take an early 8-0 lead before the Quarriers went on a 10-0 run of their own to take the lead.
From that point on, it was a back-and-forth contest. Canton led 28-26 at half and the teams were tied at 41 heading into the fourth quarter.
Clutch free-throw shooting late paid off for the C-Hawks, who clung to a five point lead as time expired.
“I was proud of how our team dug out of an early deficit,” said Jason Fersdahl, Dell Rapids head coach. “Canton is a very physical team and every rebound and inside shot was hotly contested, but our guys stepped up to the physicality of the game and kept going strong to the basket and we fought for every rebound and loose ball.”
The Quarriers grabbed 33 rebounds, including 11 on the offense end of the floor.
Dell Rapids’ Zane Schumaker led all scorers with 20 points, while Ty Hoglund added 13 for the Quarriers.
Hoglund’s 28 points against the Mustangs lifted the Quarriers past Tri-Valley Friday night in Dell Rapids. After trailing 30-26 at half, Dell Rapids tightened up on defense in the second half and reclaimed the lead. The Quarriers won 69-61.
“I was very pleased with our defensive intensity in the second half as we executed our plan to limit scoring opportunities for Tri-Valley's standout guard, Brendan Boomsma, after we let him get going in the first half when he scored 17 points,” Fersdahl said.
The Quarriers did a good job under the boards, snagging 24 rebounds against a tall Mustang team.
“We were able to make key free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the game,” Fersdahl said.
For the Quarriers, Hoglund went 8 of 8 from the line and Schumaker was 7 of 8.
Schumaker had 15 points on the night, while Cody Nielsen had 14 points and eight rebounds for Dell Rapids. Quarrier big man Ben Hammer had six blocks.
The Quarriers ended their week with a 62-52 win over Tea Area Saturday at the Dakota XII Classic in Tea.
“I feared we would have some tired legs against Tea after playing Tri-Valley the night before, but our players came out with a lot of energy on both ends of the floor,” Fersdahl said.
Schumaker again paced Dell Rapids, this time scoring 22 points and adding six assists. Zach White scored 15 points for the Quarriers, Nielsen 12 and Hoglund 10.
Free throws helped the Quarriers keep the Titans at bay late. Dell Rapids went 15 of 17 from the stripe.
“We knew Tea would make a strong fourth quarter run against us, but I was proud of our team for withstanding their run and finishing the game in a very strong way,” Fersdahl said.
The Quarreirs are 9-6 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
