An 80-year old bridge near the Dell Rapid High School will be replaced next summer after being deemed deficient.
In the meantime, the Minnehaha County Commission posted gross vehicle weight limits on the east 15th Street bridge. Travel is restricted to a maximum of 10 tons for a single truck, 18 tons for a tractor and trailer and 21 tons for a straight truck and trailer.
Shannon Schultz with the county highway department said the $340,000 reconstruction project is expected to start in late May, and should be completed by the time school reconvenes in late summer 2014.
The Dell Rapids bridge is just one of dozens that the county needs to replace.
A bridge on County Highway 126 one mile north and 1.7 miles west of Crooks, and a bridge on County Highway 122 1.1 miles south and 6.6 miles west of Garretson, have limits of 12 tons, 20 tons and 23 tons, for a truck, tractor-trailer combination and a truck and trailer, respectively.
The bridge in Crooks is set to be reconstructed next year. The bridge near Garretson will be repaired or replaced in either 2014 or 2015.
The bridges are among 20 in the county that are in such disrepair they are inspected annually rather than every other year, according to Highway Superintendent DJ Buthe.
Overall, 32 bridges in Minnehaha County have some sort of weight restriction. Violating posted load limits is a class 2 misdemeanor, and the county can recover damages for anyone who exceeds those limits and causes injury or damages a bridge.
