For every blow the Cardinals threw Friday night on the cold, wet field in White, Deubrook High answered, handing St. Mary its first loss of the season with a 40-38 win.
The Cardinal offense played well, again forging a potent ground attack. They compiled 342 yards.
“Our offensive line did an outstanding job of opening holes for our backs,” said Ross Flemmer, St. Mary’s head football coach.
Josh Brown had 189 of those yards on 27 carries, scoring on runs of 35, 31 and 35 yards.
Ben Bunkers had 130 yards on 17 carries and an 11-yard touchdown. He also scored on a 20-yard reception.
Deubrook also displayed strong rushing schemes with 324 rushing yards.
“Defensively we had some trouble bottling up their running game, but came up big on several 3rd and 4th downs and got some turnovers from them,” Flemmer said.
Christian Schnieders led the defense with six tackles and a forced fumble.
Bunkers had a fumble recovery and five tackles.
“The kids played hard, they kept fighting back and worked hard the whole game,” Flemmer said. “I was very proud of how our kids handled themselves in the face of adversity.”
