Dell Rapids 14s headed to state tournament

The Dell Rapids 14s are headed to the VFW B Teener State Baseball Tournament in Vermillion this weekend after dominating the competition at the region tournament last week.
Playing each of its five region games in Milbank, Dell Rapids opened the tournament with a 5-3 win over Madison White Thursday.
Trevor Pulscher set the tone for the team with an exceptional pitching performance against a Madison team that had not been beat all year. In seven innings of work, Pulscher recorded nine strikeouts while giving up four walks, five hits, two earned runs and two unearned runs to get the win.
On the offensive side for Dell Rapids, Seth Andersen was 2 for 2 with two base on balls and three runs scored. Nick Hoffman went 1 for 2 with two base on balls and one run scored. Nate McKee also contributed offensively for Dell Rapids with two hits on four at bats and two runs batted in.
Friday, Dell Rapids 14s topped Dell Rapids 13s 6-4 to stay in the winners bracket.
Mason Peter came onin relief in the second inning to pick up the win. In 3 2/3 innings of work, Peter recorded four strikeouts, two walks, two hits and two earned runs.
McKee pitched the final two frames to pick up the save. He recorded four strikeouts while giving up no earned runs.
Andersen again set the tone on offense for Dell Rapids 14s, going 2 for 3 with one walk and two runs scored.
Peter and Pulscher were both 1 for 3 to add to the hitting.
“This was a very important next step in the tournament to keep us in the winning bracket, plus to be playing the younger team was added pressure,” said Monte Kerzman, Dell Rapids 14s’ coach.
Later in the day, Dell Rapids 14s faced Milbank, the only remaining team without a loss in the tournament. A win meant a trip to the state tournament.
Dell Rapids was down 8-0 after two innings but battled back and got the 17-15 win over the tournament’s host team.
Eric Klein came in relief in the second inning to earn the win. Klein pitched five innings while recording five strikeouts and four walks. He gave up six hits and eight earned runs and hit two batters.
Peter came in to pick up the save with 2/3 of inning and one strikeout.
Dell Rapids got contributions from much of its lineup, including Nick Hoffman who was 4 for 4, scored three runs, drove in two runs and recorded a walk.
Ross Wiebenga went 2 for 2, scored two runs, two RBI and drew one walk. Tanner Heim was 2 for 2 with three RBI, three runs, one walk and one hit by pitch.
With a trip to the state tournament guaranteed, Dell Rapids split it’s final two games of the region tournament, both against Madsion White.
In the first game, Madison topped Dell Rapids 12-7, giving Dell Rapids its only tournament loss.
Heim took the loss pitching four innings. He recorded 12 strikeouts, eight walks, five hits and gave up nine earned runs. Elijah Story came in relief, pitching two innings while recording six strikeouts, one walk, three hits and three earned runs.
Offensive stars of the game were Andersen, who went 2 for 3, had two walks and scored one run.
Hoffman went 2 for 4, drove in one run, scored a run and earned a walk.
McKee was 2 for 5 with one RBI.
Later in the day, Dell Rapids got revenge with a 12-7 win over Madison White in the final game of the tournament to earn the Region Tournament Championship.
Dawson Kerzman pitched six innings to pick up the win for the region championship with two strikeouts, four walks, six earned runs, one unearned run and nine hits.
Heim came on in the 7th inning to pick up the save. He had two strikeouts, one walk, one hit and no earned runs.
Offensive stars of the game were Heim - 3 for 4, two RBI and two runs – and Eric Klein - 2 for 4 and one run.
Andersen also contributed for Dell Rapids with a 2 for 3 performance. He drove in two RBI, scored three runs, earned one walk and was hit by a pitch.

The team is coached by Monte Kerzman and Steve Hansen.
