Board adopts cheerleader supervision policy

The Dell Rapids School Board adopted a new cheerleading travel policy at its April 8 meeting, voting unanimously to limit the number of events the cheer team will attend starting next year.
Dell Rapids Activities Director Jeff Dvorak told the boardearlier this year the cheer team has traditionally traveled to every wrestling, football and boys and girls basketball event, often without supervision.
“I have a very big concern with the fact that our cheerleaders go to events and there’s no supervision,” he told the board at its Feb. 11 meeting.
Dell Rapids High School cheerleaders attend about 80 events every school year, with cheer coach Magen Richeal attending about 30.
The board and Dvorak agreed it wouldn’t be feasible to require Richeal to attend every athletic event and adopted a policy that would limit cheerleaders to no more than 46 events each school year.
“I don’t necessarily like it but I understand the reason for it,” said Tom Morris, school board president.
On the schedule adopted by the board for the 2013-2014 for sideline cheer are five football games, five wrestling meets, and nine events each for boys and girls basketball.
All post-season events will be attended by the cheer team.
