More than 40 firefighters from four departments tended to a burning hog barn for three hours Friday morning west of Dell Rapids.
First responders were alerted of a burning hog confinement on Mike Brown’s property - 46826 245th St. - around 6:15 a.m. Dell Rapid firefighters arrived soon after to find the structure heavily engulfed in flames.
The structure, not occupied by any animals or people at the time of the fire, was made up of four sections and an office.
“The office and two of the section are burnt down completely,” said Rick Morris, Dell Rapids Fire Chief. “They were pretty much engulfed when we got there.”
Crews used a front-end loader tractor to separate the other two confinement sections from the blaze in hopes of reducing the damage, but Morris said they still suffered some fire and smoke damage.
Morris didn’t suspect any wrongdoing led to the incident but said the official cause is still under investigation.
