Dell Rapids School Board Vice-President Cindy Schuch will not seek another term.

Schuch has been on the board since July 2007 and had two children in the Dell Rapids school system.

Dell Rapids resident Jody Schumaker, a federal probation officer, will replace Schuch on the board in July.
Schumaker and his family moved to Dell Rapids in 1997. He and his wife have have three children, grades five through 10, in Dell Rapids schools.

Schumaker said he’d been considering serving on the board for some time but the moment hadn’t been right until now

“I’ve had interest for a while but i didn’t feel I had lived here long enough. I didn’t think anyone would want anyone brand new ... so I waited awhile,” he said. “It’s my time to take the responsibility of serving on the school board and help the kids in this community.”

Board member Matthew Weiland is up against the end of his first term and will pursue a second.

He said he’d like to continue helping the school board build rapport with the community, which he expects to lead to a better understanding of district needs among community members.

“When we built that middle school, it took five bond elections before it got past,” Weiland said. “That was a problem of community not understanding the needs of the school district.”
