Quarrier Girls Basketball: Team places character, drive in high regard

Character and motivation both are playing a big role in pre-season prep for the Dell Rapids Quarriers, and the school’s girls basketball team began official practices last week to put that to use.
With six seniors on the roster and one more than last year’s 19-person count in the lineup, coach Jeff Dvorak thinks the girls have what it takes to put forth a successful season.
“I see strong character in our seniors and have no doubt they’ll lead this team well,” he said. “So far this senior leadership has been tremendous. These six have all put in a lot of hours this off-season, they are on top of the motivational boards in the locker room and songs for pre-game, and, most importantly, they are pushing themselves and their teammates very hard in practice.”
The coach cites size and speed among the team’s biggest strengths, and a healthy mix of both, as well as good perimeter shooters and inside game players, should give them some district clout.
“We have some young, talented kids who are hungry to prove themselves, along with some mature, basketball-savvy upperclassmen,” Dvorak said.
Early on, the team has been preparing for stiff competition in both the district and conference levels. “We are emphasizing the ‘little things,’ as well as our need to be multi-dimensional on both ‘O’ and ‘D,’” the Quarrier coach said, adding that the girls are striving to do as much as they can in their power to not be outworked on the court.
With the first game of the season set against Sioux Falls Christian, last year’s district champs, the girls coach hopes the team can concentrate on what’s important. “Being the first game of the year, we will be focusing a lot more on who and what we are rather than them.”
Dvorak’s goals for the team this season include being great teammates to one another, having each player know her job and execute it perfectly, being “aggressive, feisty, hard-to-beat, enjoying the moment and having character on the court and otherwise and being prepared for every situation.
