The St. Mary players stayed close to their opponents during an away game last Friday, but host Estelline came away with the win in the ball game.
After a hard-fought match, Estelline won the night, 24-14, bringing St. Mary’s football record to 3-3 heading into the Arlington game this Friday.
“We played hard for the most part, but turnovers and penalties cost us in the end,” coach Ross Flemmer said. “We’ll have to try and rebound this week against Arlington.”
St. Mary topped its opponents in overall yardage gained, totaling 291 to Estelline’s 271, while rushing yielded similar results, with the Cardinals topping out at 293 and the host team 193.
Estelline made up for it in passing, though, as the team connected 78 gained yards to St. Mary’s two.
Coach Flemmer cited Jared Scholten’s efforts on the defensive line, bringing down 11.5 tackles, while Jacob Frost totaled seven and Josh Brown 6.5.
Brown additionally led the rushing charge, with 139 carries and 166 yards for a touchdown, while Ben Bunkers took on 21 carries, rushed 101 yards and brought in one touchdown.
Christian Schnieders helped pushed the Cardinal cause with his three carries to rush for 26 yards.
