With two matches on the Dell Rapids schedule last week, the Quarrier volleyball team posted two varsity wins for Homecoming week, starting with the Tuesday home bout versus the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars.
The local girls brough in set scores of 11-25, 25-15, 25-22 and 25-16 to win the match 3-1 for the varsity squad, which was led by Margo Hegge’s five-kill and eight-assist performance, as well as the 12 points and five kills brought in by McKenzie Rinehart.
“The team reacted well to all of the multiple position changes,” coach Dale Solberg said. “I feel that the new changes will make us the best that we can be. It will take time to get used to playing together, but I really like what I saw. There were many good things done out on that floor.”
Additonally, Cassidy Wright picked up two blocks and seven kills for the Quarriers, while Mikaela Stofferhan connected for 12 points, and Madie Vietor brought in five kills and a block for Dells.
The junior varsity lineup dropped the match (17-25, 23-25), led by Jordan Stone, Karlie Leighton, Brittnay Welbig, Brittney Siemonsma and Maria Nagelhout, while the “C” squad downed the Cougars with set scores of 25-17 and 25-6.
Next up for the girls was a traveling match to Lennox, where the varsity Quarriers outdid the Orioles 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22).
Wright led the girls with 11 kills and 14 service points on the match, while Vietor knocked down three blocks. Morgan Hoglund posted 12 digs for the Dells squad.
“We played sluggish,” Solberg said. “We got to start building up as we head down a tough stretch toward district play.”
The junior varsity girls won their match 25-12 and 25-20, while the “C” team dropped the Lennox face-off 0-2 (14-25 and 11-25).
The girls will take on Sioux Valley at home on Thursday.
