Dells XC invite draws nearly 300
Quarrier JV takes No. 2 slots

The Dell Rapids Quarriers hosted its annual cross country invite Sept. 19 at the Rocky Run Golf Course, with all three area teams in play.
Though Tea Area and Sioux Falls Christian took the top two team spots for the meet, the Quarriers pulled in a seventh place finish out of the nine competing in the team totals.
Trevor Ward of Estelline crossed the finish line first, with a 17:59.60 time, while Matt Moen of Baltic came off best of the area teams, placing 21st (19:48.51) in a field of 69 runners.
The Quarriers’ pushed Zane Schumaker through to 27th overall, ending the race at 20:10.29, while St. Mary’s Mitch Roemen took 29th (20:12.22).
“As a whole the kids are running very well,” Quarrier coach Steve Hegge said. “Their placing and times are really improving. Zane Schumaker is really stepping up and feeling good.”
Rounding out the St. Mary Cardinal running group were Ethan Schmidt (35th, 20:35.69) and Matt Farmer (45th, 21:07.64).
Also running for the Dell Rapid Public team were Micah Roemen (43rd, 21:02.35), Ted DeLange (46th, 21:30.10), Tyler Gee (47th, 21:30.49), Alec Riswold (53rd, 21:53.53) and Alec Reams (60th, 22:21.38).
Baltic’s sole other runner in the varsity division was Noah Brown (67th, 24:39.39).
On the girls’ side, Garretson came out on top in the varsity division, while Canton placed second. The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls pulled off the fourth place team finish.
Halie McMains of Canton finished first (15:47.25), while the top-ranked Dells area runner was Corynn Hoff (14th, 17:08.53) in the 70-wide field of competitors.
Additionally, Quarrier runner Lexi Snyder brought in 20th (17:41.80).
“Lexi Snyder is working hard and improving along with the Hoff sisters,” Hegge said. “Averi Pankonen is running very comfortable and strong. I am pleased with the team’s efforts.”
Also running for the Quarriers were Shaylee Hoff (23rd, 17:52.16), Averi Pankonen (25th, 17:57.03), Jessica Tisher (35th, 18:38.61), Rachel Devlin (37th, 18:41.84) and Hannah Fiedler (51st, 19:24.40).
Junior Varsity Boys
Though Estelline took the No. 1 spot in the JV boys division of the Dell Rapids Invite, the Quarriers logged four of the top 10 slots in the race, with 82 competing.
Caleb Kirschenmann came off best, finishing in second place for the day with a final time of 16:14.42, while Brett Mogen came in sixth, with 16:33.67. Rounding out the top 10 finishers were Nick Holmes (9th, 16:45.75) and Sam VanVoorst (10th, 16:54.68).
Dells also ran several other competitors in the race, including Tyler Dishman (12th, 17:08.97), Luke Snoozy (13th, 17:09.21), Jason Cook (15th, 17:15.53), Sheldon Siemonsma (42nd, 18:32.08), Derek Ahlers (64th, 20:11.18), Austin Domel (65th, 20:12.24) and Drew Wood (79th, 20:43.12).
The Bulldogs also ran several racers at the invite, competing with Tanner DeLoy (30th, 18:07.18), Isaac Land (60th, 19:39.68), Drew Stadem (62nd, 19:55.54), Eric Mohr (70th, 20:21.74) and Karson Koopman (78th, 20:42.52).
Junior Varsity Girls
With 55 runners in play, Dell Rapids and St. Mary each placed girls in the top 10 for the junior varsity race. Joni Hofer of Tea Area came off best, finishing 18:45.49 in the 4,000-meter event.
Second and third were snatched up by the Quarrers, though, as Meg Dearduff (18:54.74) and Mikayla DeNoon (19:12.52) crossed the line next. Kaylee Hennen rounded out the Quarriers’ top competitors, taking seventh (19:20.86). The Cardinals competed two runners – Cassy Geraets (9th, 19:25.41) and Jackie Wolles (11th, 19:47.91).
Also running for the JV Quarriers were Melanie Wilke (12th, 19:49.75), Lindsey Morris (20th, 20:28.93), Kalista Graham (27th, 21:11.26), Maddie Huntimer (47th, 24:15.07), Chrystina Anderson (49th, 25:14.33) and Ilenne Jaycox (50th, 25:14.68). Running for the Bulldogs were Mariah Schroeder (28th, 21:12.59) and Kayla Kappler (41st, 23:21.52).
