Squads bone up on topics for upcoming meets

The Dell Rapids Quarrier quiz bowl teams are poised for a successful season of meets, with practices set to begin as early as today.
High school adviser Mary Haas said the expected team member count should be around 12-13 students, with nine returners and three new freshman recruits from last year’s middle school team.
The coach hopes that this team makeup will help as competitions begin.
“Since I have a lot of returners, I think we will do pretty well,” she said. “How well we do also depends on the luck of the draw regarding questions, since we don’t know the topic of any questions until the corresponding number for a question is asked.”
Math and science have proved to be the team’s traditional strong suit, while grammar and literature tend to be the weakest, though Haas has reserved assessments of this year’s crew until practices begin.
“Practice allows me to see each student’s strength so I put together a team that reflects different strengths to round out the team,” she said.
On the middle school side, coach Ashley Brockhaus hopes that excitement will propel her team through the challenges ahead.
Though practices didn’t start until this week, the team adviser said she has sensed the desire to get going.
“The few times that we have had a chance to meet, I see great potential,” Brockhaus said. “The students are excited to get the season started.”
This year’s squad at the middle school includes about 15 students, including a few returning players. As far as the lineup’s strong points, the coach cites math, science and literature, whereas government could use some improvement.
“We have always done well in the past, so we would like to continue,” Brockhaus said. “Dell Rapids has a lot of bright students so we should be able to compete at a competitive level this year.”
The middle school team is set to attend one meet in the fall and a two to three in the spring.
