Fall Preview: Dells oral interp promotes growth
Adviser hopes to encourage individual efforts

With preparations and signups underway, the Dell Rapids High School and Middle School oral interp teams are looking to keep their scores and energy high as competition nears.
The groups have a new coach this year, Dells teacher Sharon Mitchell, who hopes to increase involvement this season, namely since the South Dakota High School Activities Association made junior high students eligible for high school competition.
“We’ve just started seventh and eighth grade signups, and we’re looking at over 45 participants now,” she said. “It could easily grow to more than 50.”
Category choice is key for oral interp members, said Mitchell, who hopes that the students find ways to individualize their pieces.
“It’s important to get kids competing in a category that’s right for them, with pieces they can perform well and grow with a s speakers,” she said. “Once interpers and I choose a piece, we work on cutting it to the right time limit, and then we work on making it their own.”
The coach said that she serves as an as-needed judge for the performers throughout the process. “I make sure it follows all of the regulations set up by the state for each category,” she said. “I think this works well, because students are more successful when they have control over their interpretation and aren’t just doing what a director tells them to do.”
The teacher hopes that giving the team members freedom for their own unique interpretation will help achieve high marks in the long run.
“If a certain piece speaks to these kids, they are much better at making it an awesome contest piece,” she said.
