Fall Preview: Dells bands join forces for marching

Taking to the streets, starting with the Dells-hosted Homecoming parade later this month, the Dell Rapids High School Band has begun rehearsing its routine for pep band outings and competitions for the fall season.
This year’s marching band group will include a combination of the seventh and eighth graders and the high school players, a decision that Smith feels makes sense.
“The high school band – they play really well,” he said. “I thought the high school band’s strengths are the middle school band’s weaknesses, and vice versa, so why don’t we just combine the two?”
The group as a whole includes 74 players and three flags, an image that Smith hopes will have a great effect once the marchers hit the parade route.
“It’ll kind of give us a new factor when they see a bigger band coming down the street,” he said.
The conglomerate ensemble’s first outing will the Homecoming parade Sept. 24, and the Dells group has begun the footwork.
“The kids have memorized the music,” Smith said. “Now we just have to go outside and try playing and moving.”
This year’s music selection is the theme music, written by John Williams, from the 1978 movie Superman.
The combined group will be solely for marching. Once concert performance season begins, the groups will separate again.
The director has been happy with the efforts of the players since the beginning of the school year.
“They’ve been really a hardworking group so far,” he said. “I think we’re going to be better than we were in the last couple years. I’m encouraged by that aspect of it.”
And as practices continue, the band director has seen leadership and skill progress.
“It’s getting to the point where they’re not afraid to take a chance here or there,” he said.
