The St. Mary Cardinal volleyball team saw an uptick in success this past week, as two home matches left the girls an additional two victories to their now 3-5 record.
The first of the two matches, versus Freeman Sept. 4, resulted in an at-times commanding 3-1 win for St. Mary.
The Cardinals, led by a 14-dig match from Lexie LeBrun and four-ace night from Danielle Fiegen, went 25-20 in the first set, propelling the momentum into the second, 25-14.
Though the girls faltered slightly in the third outing, 21-25, Freeman fell to Dell Rapids in a 25-21 final set result.
Mikayla Brown and LeBrun led the St. Mary netters in kills, with nine apiece, while Kelly Michel supported with six. Additionally Fiegen offered up 10 digs and one block for Dells, while Tori Michel picked up 18 assists.
Two days later at the Cardinal home turf, the girls took on Castlewood with similar results. Though the first set was a nail-biter, the St. Mary team walked away with a first win, 25-21. The second set widened the gap, 25-18, while the third proved tricky again, Dell Rapids falling 22-25.
The final set of the night sealed the deal for the Cardinal squad, who outdid Castlewood 25-23 to win the Sept. 6 match.
Tori Michel again led the girls in assists, with 14, while Abby Siemonsma offered up 11 for the Cardinal cause. LeBrun served six aces to Fiegen and Tori Michel’s four apiece, and Kelly Michel proved an effective blockers, successfully knocking down five for the match.
LeBrun also led in digs, with 11, while Fiegen and Brown each added nine to the stats book. Fiegen killed 12 Castlewood attempts, while LeBrun picked up 10 kills and Brown seven.
