A home game to kick off the season Aug. 31 brought St. Mary’s football team a strong start to the fall season versus De Smet/Iroquois. Continuing on to week two, Castlewood toppled the Cardinals on the opposing team’s home turf.
St. Mary worked toward a 34-28 finish in the first game, as the boys used successful passing to their advantage to edge De Smet/Iroquois.
Leading the passing cause for the hosting Dell Rapids team was Wes Heinricy, who threw 79 yards in passing, propelling three touchdowns for St. Mary, while Ben Bunkers passed for 17 yards.
On the other end, Jared Scholten led the boys in successful receptions, scoring two touchdowns off of 39 yards passed, while Noel Hansen racked up 57 receiving yards and one touchdown on the night.
Helping out on the Dell Rapids offense were Bunkers, who rushed for 108 yards, and Josh Brown, who pushed through 84 rushing yards toward two touchdowns.
Defensively, Brown led the boys, with 12.5 tackles to Scholten’s 10.5. Additionally, Christian Schnieders racked up eight tackles, and Hansen matched it.
The boys traveled to Castlewood Sept. 7 to less successful results. Ending the game at 58-6, in favor of the host team, the Cardinals will use the Sept. 14 match versus Oldham-Ramona/Rutland to get back on track.
“Castlewood is a good team,” coach Ross Flemmer said. “We didn’t execute or do the things that we could control to allow ourselves a chance to win this game. We will need to work extremely hard next week in order to get back on track and put ourselves in position to win.”
St. Mary tallied 105 rushing yards on the match, while Hansen led the boys with eight carries totaling 65 yards. Coach Flemmer also cited Bunkers for his seven carries and 28 yards to bring in the sole touchdown for the Cardinals.
Scholten led the team defensively, rallying for seven tackles to Bunkers’ 5.5.
