Jesse James Invite: Cross country squads race wide-ranging competitor field

The Bulldog, Cardinal and Quarrier cross country teams each had representation at the Sept. 4 meet in Garretson, as Dell Rapids and Baltic sent varsity and JV runners to the Jesse James Invite at River Ridge there last Tuesday.
The girls 5K run kicked off the event last week, with Dells Public and Dell Rapids St. Mary each competing in the division.
Though Emily Hawkes of Madison came off with the top time (15:11), coming off best from Dells was Corynn Hoff (14th, 17:03), followed by teammate Lexi Snyder (21st, 17:37) and cross-town rival Cardinal Anna Wolles (23rd, 17:44).
Also competing for the Quarriers were Shaylee Hoff (27th, 18:11), Averi Pankonen (30th, 18:17), Jessica Tisher (47th, 19:22), Rachel Devlin (55th, 20:07) and Hannah Fiedler (58th, 20:27).
Sixty-six girls competed in the varsity division, with Luverne taking the No. 1 team spot. The Quarriers ranked fifth out of the nine teams in the mix for team rankings.
The 5K boys run came up next, with all three schools competing runners in the match. With 65 competitors looking for the fastest spots, Lennox ranked highest team-wise, while Tyler Lentsch of Madison won the individual race.
Mitch Roemen of St. Mary ranked highest of the area runners, taking 25th, with a final time of 19:42, while Micah Roemen of Dell Rapids Public took 33rd and 20:22.
Also running for St. Mary were Ethan Schmidt (38th, 20:47) and Matt Farmer (46th, 21:08).
Rounding out the Quarrier team were Tyler Gee (50th, 21:31), Zane Schumaker (52nd, 22:03), Alec Reams (60th, 23:45) and Alec Riswold (61st, 24:08).
Quarrier coach Steve Hegge is pleased with the team’s continued improvement. “(The) kids keep on improving,” he said. “Their work ethic and positive attitude has been an asset to their success.”
Coming off best for Baltic was Matt Moen, who took 42nd place (20:59), while teammate Noah Brown took 63rd, with a time of 25:12.
Junior Varsity Girls
The third race of the day involved 73 JV girl runners, with Beresford taking a one-two-three in the individual top rankings and first overall in team rankings.
Dell Rapids Public landed in second as a team, led by Meg Dearduff’s fourth place showing and 18:34 time. Also assisting in the high marks were Kaylee Hennen (8th, 19:29) and Mikayla DeNoon (11th, 19:36).
Cassy Geraets led the Cardinal runners, ranking 13th (19:46), while fellow runner Kennedi Mullaney pulled off 20th (20:11).
Baltic ran two girls in this division, with Mariah Schroeder landing in 59th (23:49) and Kayla Kappler 65th (24:40). Also running for the Quarriers were Lindsey Morris (25th, 20:39) and Amanda Tomes (45th, 22:20).
Junior Varsity Boys
To end the day at River Ridge, the JV boys took to the course, running the 4K. Madison and Beresford dominated the top four spots of the day, but Dell Rapids Public came in with the fifth-place slot.
Nick Holmes led the Quarriers to land in the No. 5 spot (15:57), while teammates Ted DeLange and Brett Mogen came in seventh and eighth, respectively, with times of 16:18.18 and 16:18.87.
The Dells boys went on to place third in the team finals, with Caleb Kirschenmann (16th, 17:12), Sam VanVoorst (18th, 17:15), Jason Cook (19th, 17:17), Tyler Dishman (21st, 17:21), Matt Voy (52nd, 19:55), Sheldon Siemonsma (57th, 20:09), Matt Dorale (77th, 22:10) and Drew Wood (83rd, 23:23) rounding out the squad in the 87-wide field.
The Bulldogs also ran several JV boy runners, with Tanner DeLoy coming off best in 34th (18:33) and Drew Stadem supporting the cause (53rd, 19:56).
Also running for Baltic were Isaac Land (71st, 21:04), Eric Mohr (75th, 21:57) and Karson Koopman (81st, 22:40).
