Salem meet draws Dells, Baltic cross country teams
Hoff, Roemen, Wolles among top-ranked

The McCook Invitational Aug. 28 brought all three area teams to the competition, with the Dell Rapids Quarriers coming off best in girls competition and Dell Rapids St. Mary Cardinals bringing some high rankings in the boys division.
In the varsity girls competition, Dell Rapids Public came off best, taking second overall – to Garretson’s first – while St. Mary and Baltic didn’t compete in the team rankings. Eleven total teams factored into the overall results.
Corynn Hoff led Dell Rapids with ninth place and a 12:58 finish time to first place McKayla Wieczorek’s (West Central) 12:15.
“Corynn Hoff is really running well. Her hard work over the summer is paying off,” Quarrier coach Steve Hegge said. “The girls ran well. The young runners are stepping up and having fun.”
Other top honors for the Quarrier girls were Lexi Snyder (19th, 13:25), Shaylee Hoff (29th, 13:52), Jessica Tisher (34th, 14:06) and Averi Pakonen (41st, 14:19).
Leading Baltic was Hannah Wegehaupt, who walked away with 22nd in the 79-wide field. Her 13:33 kept her in the top 25 for the day.
For St. Mary, Anna Wolles came off best, placing 14th with 13:17.
For the varsity boys, St. Mary pulled off a sixth-place team finish, while Dell Rapids Public placed 14th out of the 17 teams competing in the division. Parker to tops ranks overall.
Mitch Roemen came off best, taking 20th out of 90 competitors with a final time of 16:18, while Ethan Schmidt garnered 28th, with 16:37. Matt Farmer rounded out the team showing with 40th and 17:13.
Dells Public competed Micah Roemen for 24th place and 16:29. Other top finishers for the Quarrier boys were Zane Schumaker (63rd, 18:43) and Alec Riswold (78th, 19:45).
“Injury is hurting our boys team, but we just need to work through it,” Hegge said. “It was a hot day, but a lot of the kids stepped up and had their personal best.”
Baltic ran one runner in the division – Matt Moen – who ranked 45th, with 17:41 at the finish.
The junior varsity runners yielded some top finishes for all the area teams, with the Quarriers placing Meg Dearduff (6th, 15:11), Kaylee Hennen (7th, 15:12), Mikayla DeNoon (10th, 15:30), Lindsey Morris (18th, 16:09) and Melanie Wilke (22nd, 16:17) near the top of the girls field.
Baltic ran Mariah Schroeder (35th, 17:30) and Kaylee Kappler (51st, 19:48) at the invite.
For the JV boys runners, Nick Holmes came off best, with sixth place and a 12:12 finish. The Quarriers also ran Brett Mogen (10th, 12:37), Ted DeLange (21st, 12:58), Sam VanVoorst (23rd, 13:01), Caleb Kirschenmann (25th, 13:04), Tyler Dishman (27th, 13:08) and Jason Cook (29th, 13:10) near the top.
Baltic runners ranked toward the top of the heap included Tanner DeLoy (34th, 13:42), Noah Brown (58th, 14:43) and Drew Stadem (71st, 15:35).
