Class Q status grandfathered in

A Jan. 17 meeting of the Dell Rapids City Council served as an opportunity to inform the public on city licensing, as well as a grant awarded for an equipment purchase.
After approval from the State of South Dakota, the city council approved an amendment to the liquor license ordinance in Dell Rapids.
The ordinance now states that the city can issue four additional alcoholic beverage sale licenses, as well as the grandfathered Class Q license held by the Old Dutch Inn.
The Class Q style of liquor license was eliminated by the state this year, so the council put in a request to allow Old Dutch to receive a license beyond the allotted four for the town.
At the meeting, the council also approved two additional garbage hauler licenses after already approving seven at the previous meeting.
The two licenses were Van Dyke Sanitation out of Edgerton, Minn., and Bolte’s Sunrise out of Worthing.
A letter from the South Dakota Municipal League (SDML) was presented to the public during the Jan. 17 meeting. The letter was in response to a request to be involved in the annual SDML Workers’ Compensation Fund Grant.
As a recipient of the grant, Dell Rapids will receive financial assistance in the purchase of a new gas saw from Stan Houston.
City finance officer LeAnn Kerzman reminded the council and the public that there would be four ward vacancies in the upcoming election.
Ward 1’s David Sommerfeld, Ward 2’s John Paul, Ward 3’s Craig Lauritzen and Ward 4’s Doug Grovenburg will be up for reelection if they choose to run.
Petition circulation could begin Jan. 27, and they must be returned for consideration in the April 10 election by Feb. 24.
The next meeting of the Dell Rapids City Council is Monday, Feb. 6.
