Two returning state place winners will anchor the 2009-2010 Dell Rapids wrestling team.
Caleb Buysse and Jordan Lindberg each placed sixth at the state wrestling tournament last season.
“We are going to work hard this season and have some fun along the way,” Coach Craig Jorgensen said. “As a team, we need to stay focused and healthy. I believe we have some very good talent in the room and can put a quality team on the mat.”
Returning seniors are Caleb Buysse, Cade Buysse, Jordan Munk, Evan Murphy and Andrew Ahrendt. Juniors on the team are Austin Gee, Taran Xavier and Greg Schwebach.
Sophomores on the squad are Lindberg, Chad Munk, Brenden Entringer and Brad Zwart. Ninth graders being counted on are Jackson Entringer, Dylan Lesselyoung, Ryan Nichols, Phillip Schwebach, Riley Miller and Trevor Peter.
Cade Buysse said the strength of this year’s team would be the middleweights ranging from 119 pounds to 140 pounds.
“One thing we need to work on this year as a team is senior leadership,” he said. “The seniors have to step up and lead in practices.”
Last year the Quarriers finished 19-2 in dual meets. However this season, Buysse said the team would be a better tournament team because of all the returning wrestlers.
Last season, Dell Rapids finished second in the region tournament and 18th in the state tournament.
The Quarriers open the season on Dec. 5 at the Chester Area Invitational.
Buysse said the opening tournament helps the wrestlers gain some confidence heading into the season.
“It helps us determine where the team is at and what the wrestlers need to work on,” he said.
The tournament starts at 11 a.m. at Chester Area High School.
