It was total domination by the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers.
The Chargers ended the volleyball season for Dell Rapids by winning three games, 25-13, 25-9 and 25-14 to win the District 6A title at the Chargers gym on Nov. 5.
“We’re disappointed, but they had a lot to do with it. We didn’t play our best,” Coach Dale Solberg said. “We just got pounded. They are a very good team.”
Senior Shelby Bierema said this isn’t what we expected. “Sioux Falls Christian is a very good team and is very athletic,” she said. “We had a great season and a great group of girls to play with.”
Bierema said during the match the team was slow at getting to the blocks. “They were hitting the open spots,” she said.
Sioux Falls Christian came out quickly and did not let up throughout the three games. At one point in the first set, Sioux Falls Christian was on top 21-10.
In the second set, the Quarriers had a short run, rallying from 9-2 down to get within 11-7.
After that Sioux Falls Christian went on an 8-0 run to move out to a commanding 19-7 lead. The final game was more of the same.
Solberg said that Sioux Falls Christian is so tough at home. “They’re a different team playing here,” he said.
Afterward, Solberg said he told the team that they cannot reflect on what they accomplished during the season on one night.
“They did a lot of good things throughout the year,” he said.
“We played a tough schedule. We went up against a lot of quality teams and held our own throughout.”
Bierema had seven kills and Danielle Schuch contributed three kills.
Paige Bunkers added six points, while Lexie Pierson had two blocks and Ashley Munk dug up nine Charger attacks.
The Quarriers opened district play with a three set win over Baltic, 25-18, 25-6 and 25-21.
Munk led the way with 15 points, 12 digs and nine good serve receives, while Kristi Hoffman contributed nine points, six good serve receives and 17 set assists.
Paige Bunkers added 12 digs and six serve receives, while Bierema had 11 kills and Karlie Solum had 16 digs.
Dell Rapids ended the season with a 13-15 record.
