The Dell Rapids cheer squad continues to win in its division at competitive meets. On Sept. 24, the Quarriers had an average score of 124.5 to win the small squad stunting and tumbling at the Sioux Valley Invitational in Volga. A week earlier, the girls were first in small squads competition and fourth overall in Brookings. The Quarriers continued the same routine that includes stunting, jumps, dancing, cheer and tumbling. In Volga, Coach Magen Richeal found out at the last minute that the squad’s main tumbler, Julia Brust, was out sick. In addition, Julie Eddy was also out with an injury. “We didn’t have time to come up with something quick,” she said. “It affects our tumbling. We didn’t have our star tumbler, so it brought our points down. “Julia is our main base for many of the stunts,” she added. “There was no way to replace her, so we only did half of our stunting.” Despite that the Quarriers were able to finish second overall to the host school, Sioux Valley, who captured the large squad division. Also competing were Faulkton, Redfield/Doland and Lake Preston. Richeal said the competition also provided the girls a chance to see other schools. In Brookings, Richeal said the girls did well. “The only schools that are outscoring us are the double AA schools,” she said. “We’re really going to have to add difficulty and increase our stunting to keep the girls on top.” There were 20 schools competing, with the majority being Class ‘AA’ schools.
